Each spring, Piping Plovers and Least Terns return to nest and raise their young on coastal beaches in New Jersey including Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Belmar. They share the beach with other wildlife and with people—both of which affect their ability to survive. Sadly, their survival is not guaranteed. Piping Plovers and Least Terns are both listed as Endangered Species in New Jersey. Piping Plovers are also listed as Endangered Species on the Federal level. Endangered Species are those whose prospects for survival are in immediate danger of disappearing because of a loss or change in habitat, over-exploitation, predation, competition or disturbance. Part of the natural beauty and heritage of New Jersey’s coast includes both Piping Plovers and Least Terns. Our environment relies on a delicate balance. Conservation efforts to protect Piping Plovers and Least Terns help protect our environment and the fragile relationship with all inhabitants. Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ, The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection – Non-game and Endangered Species Program, and U. S Fish & Wildlife Service works with groups like Wreck Pond Watershed Association to protect and conserve Piping Plovers and Least Terns. This is where we need YOU!
