Wild beasts and birds are by right not the property merely of people today, but the property of unknown generations, whose belongings we have no right to squander.

Wreck Pond Watershed Association seeks volunteers to monitor endangered beach nesting birds in Monmouth County.

Endangered beach nesting birds that are monitored include federal and state protected Piping Plovers and Least Terns.

Todd Pover will give a presentation on the state's beach nesting birds, including information about identification, behavior, population status, management techniques and other strategies used to protect them.  Pover is the Beach Nesting Bird Project Manager for The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, in which capacity he oversees the beach nesting bird program for the state's Endangered and Nongame Species Program.
Nancy Maclearie-Hayduk of the Wreck Pond Watershed Association will discuss her experiences coordinating a volunteer monitoring program in Monmouth County as well as effective protocol for monitoring and public outreach.
Volunteers monitor endangered beach nesting bird sites throughout the summer months.  No birding experience is required.  The workshop will teach and provide materials for identification of shore birds, review of laws protecting endangered beach nesting birds, and discuss volunteer expectations. There is no minimum amount of hours required to volunteer. The workshop provides a great opportunity to learn more about our coastal wildlife resources.
